90年代よりニューヨークのスケートシーンやジャマイカのルーツカルチャー等、世界各地を旅し、独自の視点で各地の文化をドキュメントしてきた渋谷ゆり。そんな渋谷が新たな被写体として選んだ先は、ヨセミテ国立公園にあるクライミングの聖地、Camp 4だった。本作『Camp 4, Yosemite』は、ヨテミテの自然に魅せられ、Camp 4に足繁く通ううちに、渋谷自身が交流を深めていったクライマーたちの日常を描いた作品集である。岩と対峙するクライマーのまなざし、キャンプサイトに流れるゆるやかな時間、そしてアメリカのクライミング黎明期から続く精神が、美しいモノクロ写真のなかに見事に写し出されている。

Photographer, Yuri Shibuya has traveled the world and reported on varying scenes from Jamaica’s Reggae culture to New York City Skate culture. Currently, she has shifted her lens to more natural settings. Her new book entitled ‘CAMP 4. YOSEMITE’ depicts the climbers who congregate to one of the the world’s premier climbing spots. The beautiful black & white photos capture the climbers preparing for their daily rock climbing journey’s as well as chilling out at their campsites. And in the air in all the photographs is the timeless passion and pioneering spirit of Camp 4’s early founders.

Camp 4とは

カリフォルニアにあるヨセミテ国立公園のキャンプグラウンドのひとつ。1950～60年代にアメリカのロッククライミング文化が発展したことから、2003年にはNational Register of Historic Placesに登録され、クライミングの聖地として知られる。

What is Camp 4?

Camp 4 was registered as an American National Historical place in 2003. It’s historical significance to the climbing world as a gathering place for climbers to share techniques and ideas has made it both a historical and cultural landmark.

渋谷ゆり

東京生まれ。武蔵野美術大学造形学部空間演出デザイン学科卒業。大学在学中より世界各地を旅し、独学で写真を撮り始める。ニューヨークのスケートカルチャーやジャマイカのルーツカルチャー等、各地の文化を独自の視点でとらえ、1998年よりZINEとして発表。2011年には旅の記録を綴ったフォトエッセイ集『UNDER EXPOSURE JOURNAL』（TWJ）を発行。ここ数年は、都市から自然の文化に被写体を変え、カリフォルニアを拠点に活動している。

Yuri Shibuya

Born in Tokyo. Graduated from Musashino Art University in Japan. She has been traveling and photographing the world since her university days. Shibuya focused her lens on various cultures found throughout the world, such as skateboarders in NYC and roots culture in Jamaica. She has been publishing her work in zine format since 1998. In 2011 she wrote a photo and essay book entitled “Under Exposure Journal”. Recently she has continued to document cultures, but has moved her focus from cities to nature. She currently resides in California, USA.
